“Architectural orders are like chess pieces: they have a clear, fixed identity and a range of moves within that identity.” —Reiser + Umemoto, Atlas of Novel Tectonics
Dive Into The Water is a series of prints about "water". I used a combination of digital printing, screen printing, laser cutting, and watercolor painting by XY plotter robot to express the theme of "water" on different types of paper. In this book, I created dialogue for certainty and randomness. I was inspired by architectural orders. When things with different characteristics are combined within a common identity, they can achieve a balance.
In the process of using the laser to cut digital prints, the images and path of the laser are certain, but sometimes the paper burns, and unpredictable holes appear. In the screen printing part, I apply d bright inks and relatively dark inks, shake them, drop them on the screen, and then print. Although the frame and the screen which can be seen as a system are certain, the inks are fused with each other, a result that cannot be replicated is obtained. As for the XY plotter robot painting, similar to the laser part, the path is certain, but how the paint blooms each time is beyond my control.
The 34 prints are definite in this box, and how they are placed depends on the person reading the book. Layers of prints sometimes give you the illusion that you don't know where the boundaries are, where is the digital print part, and where is the silkscreen print. Cognition is doubted at a certain moment, and it needs to be discerned to confirm what is true. This book serves as a range, and each print carries its own identity. But each print is connected to different degrees by the common topic of "water". At the same time, each of them reflects the combination of certainty and randomness, which is their common identity. There are two things in common. These portraits are harmoniously included in a chess box like chess pieces.
Back to the water itself. Water has a special meaning to me. When I was 4 years old, my father and I went fishing, and I stared at duckweed. That was the first time I saw duckweed that filled the pond. I thought: "Is this grass?" So I used my feet to test. As a result, I accidentally fell into the pond. I couldn't swim. When I opened my eyes, the dim water made me feel terrified. That was the first time I felt death so close to me. Of course, my father later used his strong arms to fish me out of the water. After that, I feared the water for a long time. But now, whenever I stare at the waves on the sea or the lake, I feel so peaceful and relaxed. In my world, the two conflicting emotions, fear, and peace, are unified and balanced on the substance of water. Maybe there is also some kind of connection between them. Maybe inclusiveness and balance are the meaning of water.
